Detroit Pistons Rebrand
Branding, Motion Graphics, Typography, Visual Identity
Basketball has always been my first love, from playing it growing up, to supporting my favorite teams. Detroit Pistons has been a team of grand highs and low lows; but as they restore the organization to its former glory I wanted to offer a rebrand and visual Identity concept that honors the tradition of the champions and willingness to change. Respect the Code.
The Detroit Pistons is a basketball team/organization located in Detroit, Michigan. They have been NBA champions three times in the organizations history, defeating some of the best teams in NBA history. As the NBA changes, the Pistons haven't seen a full rebrand since those years of the champions
The goal for this project was to provide a modern twist on a fan favorite design while honoring the tradition of past champions.
I approached this project as creative director and designer to lead the concepting and design of the evolution of the brand.
I focused on designing and refining the logo and type design as well as navigate the creative direction with defining a consistent brand voice.
Process
The logo was approach with the objective of giving the team an identity again. In previous years, the logo has just been a word mark devoid of personality and spirit. I wanted to reclaim the energy captured in the 2002-2005 horse logo. Recently the team resurrected the mark, however they have not updated it to survive in the modern NBA look.
